Gregory Aziz: Adding Innovation to Railroad Freight Car Industry
Gregory James Aziz, the Chief Executive Officer, Chairman, and President of National Steel Car, is known for adding innovation to railroad freight car industry by challenging and raising the performance bar for himself and the firm. His thoughtful leadership helped National Steel Car to become the largest railroad car manufacturer in North America. Greg Aziz made sure that the company is stick to its core value as he believes that it has a deep sense of purpose. Additionally, he is known for driving the highest quality products and services to the clients along with on-time delivery performance.
The initiatives of James Aziz helped the railroad car manufacturer to be certified as ISO 9001:2008 – the only railcar company in North America with the highest quality certification. It is also recognized by TTX SECO annual award for more than a decade, consistently. Although National Steel Car has more than 100 years of quality services – founded in 1912 – it can be divided into “period before Aziz” and “after his joining.” He joined National Steel Car in 1994 by making the purchase of the company from Dofasco. Aziz was determined to bring back the golden years of the firm – once, it was the leader in railroad freight car manufacturing in North America.
Greg James Aziz focused on capital and human investment, robust engineering capabilities, and team-building, to ensure the desired results. His strategy worked out, and the firm improved its performance significantly in the later years. Aziz helped the company to expand its production capacity from 3,500 freight cars to 12,000 by 1999. Interestingly, the number of employees also showed a rise from 600 to 3,000 during the period. Aziz started his career by joining his family wholesale food venture, Affiliated Foods, in the year 1971. He helped the firm to import food products from other major fresh food markets including South America, Europe, and Central America. Additionally, Greg established a distribution network of the wholesale food business across the U.S. and Canada. In the late 80s and 90s, he concentrated in investment banking and worked with a number of New York-based investment banks, before acquiring National Steel Car. Greg completed his graduation in economics from the University of Western Ontario. Under his leadership, National Steel Car sponsored many community initiatives, including the Hamilton Opera, the Salvation Army, Theatre Aquarius, the United Way, and more.
